The CMEA car was never realized cars of the lower middle class , which is a joint project of the Comecon countries under the auspices of the GDR and the CSSR was planned.

The car, known as the P760 (also known as the 610 M ), was supposed to replace the Trabant 601 , the Wartburg 353 and the Škoda 100 . The planning for the P 760 that began in January 1970 was a major reason for discontinuing work on the Trabant P603 model , which was planned as the successor to the P601. After the failure of the RGW car P760 in April 1973 and the follow-up project P1100 / 1300 in 1979, which was also canceled, the development of new passenger cars in the GDR came to a standstill.

At the beginning of the 1970s, the SED leadership increasingly pushed for cooperation between the Comecon partner countries in relation to automobile production . Political advances in this direction had already taken place in the early 1960s. These were based on the plan to organize the production of cars based on the division of labor, whereby one hoped for a more efficient production method than with the companies working against each other in the market economy. Individual assemblies should be manufactured in each participating country. In 1966, functional models of the Trabant 603 existed in the GDR, the development of which was discontinued on the instructions of the Politburo in order to make the available capacities available for the P760 project.

The P760 type was the basis for the RGW car. Since January 1970, plans have been drawn up for this lower middle class vehicle. Production should be distributed across the participating countries for specific modules. However, there were considerable differences between the two main partners, the GDR and the ČSSR, regarding basic design properties. For example, the GDR leadership favored front-wheel drive . In the end, four functional models were built that were tested from 1972. However, since not only the individual countries competed for suitable concepts, but also individual German plants (the Zwickau and Eisenach automobile plants ), the Comecon Auto project became too confusing and, in a Politburo resolution of April 7, 1973, was deemed “not ready for a decision” put on record.
