PC-MOS / 386

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

PC-MOS / 386 is a multi- user operating system capable of multiprocessing for IBM-compatible PCs from the US company "The Software Link" ( Norcross , Georgia ). In Germany it was distributed by “COMPUCON Deutschland GmbH” (Eschenried). The abbreviation "MOS" stands for "Modular Operating System". PC-MOS is the further development of the multi-user system "Multilink".

In 2017, the operating system was published as open source under the GPLv3 license on GitHub at the endeavors of Roeland Jansen - a developer of PC-MOS .

properties

PC-MOS / 386 is compatible with the MS-DOS operating system and can make existing DOS applications available to multiple users. Installation is possible on computers with the Intel 80386 processor. Computers with the 80286 can also be used with a built-in CHARGE card (made by the Canadian company "ALL Computers").

PC-MOS was available as a multi-process single user version and as a multi-user version for 5 or 25 users. The additional products "LANLink" and "EmuLink" were offered for local networking and host connection.

PC-MOS cannot display several processes on the screen at the same time, so only one of the programs is displayed at a time, the others run in the background.
