The PDW-1500 is a digital recorder for video and audio signals from Sony for the professional sector. It is often used by production companies and broadcasters such as WDR or N24 . It fits best into non-linear digital editing systems such as B. Avid or Final Cut Pro integrate. The format name Professional Disc for Broadcast can also be found elsewhere .

Instead of recording the image material on tape as was previously the case (e.g. on Betacam SP ), the recorder uses a DVD- like data carrier called XDCAM Professional Disk. According to the manufacturer Sony, these disks can be rewritten up to 1000 times, which saves costs the generation based on the old tape leads. A PD (abbreviation for Professional Disk) fits 45 to 85 minutes, depending on the quality selected. The entire recording system is based on Blu-ray technology (a successor to DVD), which is being promoted by Sony. The device itself has two optical heads that ensure that image material can be transmitted up to 50 times faster than in real time . A so-called thumbnail function offers an image index over the entire material that is on a disc.

Formats

The following formats are supported by the recorder:

  • DVCAM recording time max. 85 minutes
  • IMX 50 - recording time max. 45 minutes
  • IMX 40 - recording time max. 57 minutes
  • IMX 30 - recording time max. 75 minutes

The use of IMX 50 offers the highest video quality with the shortest recording time.

connections

In addition to SDI , a digital connection for picture and sound, composite , XLR and Firewire (called i.LINK by Sony), the PDW-1500 also offers the option of using an Ethernet interface ( RJ-45 ) in e.g. B. editorial networks to be used and controlled.
