PLOS Pathogens , abbreviated to PLOS Pathog. , is a scientific journal published by the Public Library of Science . The first issue appeared in September 2005, it appears monthly. Studies are published that deal with pathogens and the interaction with the host organism. The topics include a. innate and acquired defense mechanisms of the immune system, (newly) emerging pathogens, pathogen-cell biology, pathogenesis, prions, rational vaccine development and virulence factors. The magazine grants open access to all articles. The authors essentially bear the costs of publication.

The impact factor in 2013 was 8,057. According to the statistics of the ISI Web of Knowledge , the journal with this impact factor ranks 10th out of 119 journals in the microbiology category , second out of 36 journals in the parasitology category and second out of 32 journals in the virology category.
