The Pa-Chan Cave ( Thai ถ้ํา ผา ชัน Tham Pa Chan , cliff cave) is an archaeological site in the Mae Hong Son Province in Northern Thailand .

The name Steilklippenhöhle indicates its location on a narrow rocky reef, which is about two kilometers from the Pai River ( Amphoe Pai ). It was discovered and studied by Chester Gorman in the 1960s . With the help of radiocarbon dating one could establish a settlement period between 5500 and 3500 BC. Determine. The bones of the Taguan and other flying squirrels were found . The remains of at least three wild cattle , two water buffaloes , thirteen deer and two pigs, whose bones had been systematically broken and charred, were also stored here . So there must have been a rich fauna here more than 6000 years ago.

Charles Higham suspected in 1989 that the animals were caught near the cave and brought here to be smoked, which would have increased the shelf life of the meat. Signs of the use of this method had already been found in the Banyan Cave . In addition, many stone tools were found that were believed to have been used to break bones in order to get to the valuable bone marrow . All of these finds indicate people of the Hoabinhian culture.

The cave is located to the north, about 3.5 km (as the crow flies) from the administration building of the Pha Dang National Park, in a forest, immediately east of the road 1178.
