Pacian of Barcelona ( Latin Pacianus , * around 300 probably in Spain , † between 379 and 392 in Barcelona ) was a bishop of Barcelona and Christian writer.

Life

Pacianus came from a noble family. After a good education, also in theological terms, he initially embarked on a secular career and married. Pacianus became Bishop of Barcelona. He wrote u. a. the writings De baptismo ("On Baptism") and Libellus exhortatorius ad poenitentiam ("On Repentance"). He defended the Catholic doctrine on the forgiveness of all sins (except the sin against the Holy Spirit ) and on the key power of the Church against the Novatians , among other things in three letters to Symphronius. In contrast to the Novatians' claim to be the true “Catholici”, he stated in a famous saying: Christiano mihi nomen est, catholico vero cognomen - Christian is my name, but Catholic is my surname .

He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church.
