The Paint Horse is a piebald horse breed that originated in the American Quarter Horse . His monochrome offspring were formerly known as Breeding Stock , today as Solid Paint Bred Horse . In the 1960s, the American Paint Horse Association was founded.

Background information on horse evaluation and breeding can be found under: Exterior , interior and horse breeding .

Exterior

The paint horse is characterized by a small, wedge-shaped head, with an alert eye, broad forehead, small, flexible ears, small, firm mouth and strong ganashes. The neck is sufficiently long and slender, well set, clearly cut out in the throat and mobile in the neck, the shoulder is sloping and, like the chest, muscular; the withers are well defined. The short back is well connected to the hindquarters; the loin is deep and strong; the hip is oblique and long, the entire hindquarters very muscular. The foundation is clear, sinewy and wiry, with firm hooves.

Despite its only average size of about 1.42 to 1.58 m, the Paint Horse can also carry heavy adults with heavy western saddles in any terrain. The horses are not bred larger in order to maintain the "typical maneuverability and breed type".

Paint Horses can be kept robust all year round in the open stable on the pasture.

A distinction is made between three drawing patterns, called "Patterns": Tobiano , Overo and Tovero. The Tobiano has white legs, and its white crosses the line of the back, the head shows the markings of a monochrome horse - you can also recognize a Tobiano by the typical plate check. With the Overo, no white crosses the back line, the white seems to come from the belly. Often he has a lot of white on his face and accordingly blue eyes, often his legs are dark. The Overo check is available in the variants Frame Overo , Splashed White Overo and Sabino Overo . The Tovero is a mixture of both coat patterns.

Paint Horses are not to be confused with Pintos - the latter are not a breed, but can come from a wide variety of crossbreeds and breeds. A paint horse must be registered with the American Paint Horse Association. The American Quarter Horse and the English thoroughbred are permitted for crossbreeding .

Paint horses are used for short distance races (the quarter mile is the classic distance), ranch work (cowboy horses) and the western riding disciplines such as reining, cutting, working cowhorse, western pleasure, trail etc.

interior

The paint horse is identical in origin, type, characteristics, pedigree and breeding goal to the breed of the American Quarter Horse . These are Western Horses - compact, agile horses of medium size, with strong muscles, powerful hindquarters and an honest, good-natured character. Paint Horses are easy to ride, willing and have strong nerves and are therefore suitable for tournament, walking, hiking and western riding. The Paint Horse has the Cow Sense , like the Quarter Horse.

Solid Paint Bred (formerly Breeding Stock)

Solid Paint Bred Horses are plain paint horses. In contrast to the spotted foals of a Paint Horse mare, due to their colorful ancestors (which live on in their genes), they are not registered as American Quarter Horses , but as so-called Solid Paint Breds. These Solid Paint Bred Horses are only allowed to start in specially advertised Solid Paint Bred classes (SPB classes) or correspondingly advertised tournament classes. In contrast to piebald Paint Horses, SPB Horses are not "Regular Paints (= paint with sufficient color)" but are marked with "Solid Paint Bred" on the paper.
