The Painted Cliffs ( English for painted cliffs ) are a series of irregularly shaped cliffs in the Antarctic Ross Dependency . In the Queen Elizabeth Range , they extend from Mount Picciotto in a southwestern direction and mark the southeastern edge of the Prince Andrew Plateau .
Participants in a campaign that ran from 1961 to 1962 as part of the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition gave the formation a descriptive name. It is named after colored sediments and corresponding igneous rock bands on the front of the cliffs.
