The Palácio Sotto Maior (also Palácio Sotto Mayor ) is a villa complex in the Portuguese coastal town of Figueira da Foz .

history

The upper-class villa complex was commissioned by the Portuguese businessman Joaquim Sotto Mayor at the end of the 19th century . He originally came from Valpaços and had made his fortune in Brazil . During a visit to the city of Figueira, he decided to build a house here, where he then lived for a long time. The construction was planned by the French architect Gaston Landeck and lasted 20 years. Well-known artists of the time were commissioned to design the interior, including the painters Antonio Ramalho and Dórdio Gomes . In addition to the main French-style building, another building was erected with a characteristic clock tower, the design of which was inspired by the Torre de Belém . The buildings are surrounded by an enclosed garden. A lookout tower is the third building at the end of the garden.

After the Sociedade Figueira Praia company acquired the facility in 1967 , it opened the building to the public in 1980. After the extensive takeover of Figueira Praia by the Amorim Group in 1990, this plant also came into their possession.

The second building is now a multifunctional, modern congress center, while the main building with its art and furnishings can still be visited. The Palácio Sotto-Mayor is one of the tourist attractions of the city of Figueira today.
