Palacio Estévez
The Palacio Estévez, also known as Casa de Gobierno "Edificio Independencia" , is a building in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo .
The building, whose construction time is not available, is located in Ciudad Vieja at Plaza Independencia 776 as well as Florida, San José and Ciudadela streets . Information about the architect is not available, Edouard Manuel de Castel is named as the author of the building project . The building, which was originally designed as a residential and commercial building for the businessman Francisco Estéves , was subject to structural changes in 1875 and 1987. Engineer Juan Alberto Capurro was responsible for the former and Enrique Benech for the latter . During the reign of Lorenzo Latorre , the Palacio Estévez was acquired by the state. It now serves as the seat of government. A museum is located on the upper floor. The eight-meter-high, two-storey building enclosing a central courtyard has a floor area of 274 m².
The Palacio Estévez has been classified as a Monumento Histórico Nacional since 1975 .
