The Palacio Nacional is a building in Santo Domingo that houses the offices of the President and Vice President of the Dominican Republic .

history

Construction began on February 27, 1944 on the orders of the then dictator Rafael Trujillo . The building was built in a neoclassical style under the direction of the Italian architect Guido D'Alessandro . The opening of the palace took place on August 16, 1947.

use

The building has three floors. On the first floor there are rooms for general services. On the first floor are the offices of the President and the Vice-President, as well as some offices of senior officials. There are reception rooms on the top floor. The most famous of these rooms is the caryatid room, which is decorated with 44 women sculptures.

Special

The New Year celebrations in the film " The Godfather II ", in which Michael Corleone confronts Fredo Corleone with his betrayal, was filmed in the palace's caryatid room.

Scenes from Andy Garcia's film "The lost City" , who actually takes place in Havana , were also shot at the presidential palace. The Cuban flag was even hoisted over the palace for this purpose.
