history

The library was built in 1908 in Nara Park at a location south of today's prefectural authority and opened the following year. To commemorate the victory of Japan in the Russo-Japanese War (1904/05) it was named "Victory Memory Library of Nara Prefecture" ( 奈良 県 立 戦 捷 紀念 図 書館 , Nara kenritsu senshō kinen toshokan ). The timber framework architecture, a design by the prefectural engineer Hashimoto Uhē ( 橋本 卯 兵衛 ), shows not only western elements such as the window front , but also characteristic Japanese elements such as a hipped foot roof ( 入 母 屋 造 , irimoya-zukuri ) and a plover gable ( 千 鳥 破 風 , chidori hafu ).

In 1923 the original name was changed to "Nara Prefectural Library" ( 奈良 県 立 図 書館 , Nara Kenritsu Toshokan ). In 1968, operations continued in new buildings. The previous wooden structure was implemented in the area of the Kōriyama Castle ( Yamatokōriyama ). Today it is protected as a prefecture cultural asset.

With the restructuring and expansion of the field of activity in 2005, another prefectural library in Kashihara ( 奈良 県 立 橿 原 図 書館 , Nara Kenritsu-Kashihara-Toshokan ) ceased operations.
