Nara Park

The Nara Park ( Japanese 奈良 公園 , Nara-kōen ) is located in Nara , Nara Prefecture . It measures 4 km from east to west and 2 km from north to south. In its area are the temples Tōdai-ji and Kōfuku-ji and the shrine Kasuga-Taisha . The park is popular because of its many sika deer and in spring during the cherry blossom season .

Important festivals

  • Cutting the deer antlers on Sundays and bank holidays in October.

There are over 1,200 wild deer in Nara Park. The deer in Nara Park grow new antlers every spring . These become hard and dangerous for visitors until the mating season in autumn. For this reason they are caught by the so-called Seko with nets and ropes. The antlers are cut by a Shinto priest .
