Kashihara ( Japanese 橿 原 市 , - shi , literally: "oak plain") is the second largest city in the Japanese prefecture of Nara . The name of the city goes back to the former government palace Kashihara no Miya ( 橿 原 の 宮 ) of the first Japanese emperor Jimmu - Tennō .

The entire urban area is flat, but offers a beautiful landscape with the nearby three mountains of Yamato, the Yamato Sanzan .

climate

Kashihara is characterized by hot summers and cold winters. Due to its location within a valley basin, there is relatively little precipitation.

City history

In the year 694, Japan's first large-scale administrative capital based on the Chinese model was built in the area where the present city extends: Fujiwara-kyō .

There are also numerous Shinto shrines in Kashihara , which were mentioned as early as the early 10th century Engishiki .

The actual urban development began during the 16th century, when the city of Imai ( 今井 ) emerged as an independent temple city around the temple Shōnen-ji ( 称 念 寺 ). The Shintō shrine Kashihara-jingū ( 橿 原 神宮 ) was founded during the Meiji period .

The community of Kashihara emerged on February 11, 1956 from the merger of the small towns of Yagi ( 八 木 町 , - chō ), Imai ( 今井 町 , -chō ), Unebi ( 畝 傍 町 , -chō ) and the villages of Masuge ( 真 菅 村 , - mura ), Kamogimi ( 鴨 公 村 , -mura ) and Miminari ( 耳 成 村 , -mura ).

Attractions

There is an important Archaeological Museum in Kashihara, which is affiliated with the Archaeological Research Institute of Nara Prefecture .
