Research institute

In 1938, on the occasion of the upcoming "2600 anniversary of Japan" in 1940, the outdoor facilities of the Kashihara shrine began to be repaired. In the course of the investigation, archaeological finds were found which were made accessible by the University of Kyoto from September 13, 1938 under the direction of Masao Suenaga (1897-1991) . This day is considered the founding day of the archaeological research institute in Kashihara. As a result of the Cultural Property Protection Act of 1950, the Prefecture's local education authority established a Department for the Protection of Cultural Property. In 1951 it was officially opened as a “Research Facility for Archaeological Cultural Assets ” ( 埋 蔵 文化 財 研究 機関 ) under the direction of Masao Suenaga. In 1972 the research institute discovered the murals in Takamatsuzuka-Kofun. Two years later, the former "Archaeological Museum of the Parks in Kashihara" ( 旧 橿 原 公 苑 考古 博物館 ) was subordinated to the research institute and renamed the "Archaeological Museum of the Kashihara Research Institute". In 1990 the research institute received new premises for the collection and conservation of archaeological finds. The research institute carries out around 100 scientific studies of archaeological cultural monuments every year.

The museum, which is now part of the research institute, was founded in 1940 as the “Historical Provincial Yamato Museum” ( 大 和 国 史館 ) and renamed the “Historical Yamato Museum” ( 大 和 歴 史館 ) in 1949 . Before it was affiliated to the Research Institute in 1974 under the name that still exists today, the museum was renamed again in April 1970 to the “Archaeological Museum of the Park in Kashihara” ( 橿 原 公 苑 考古 博物館 ). With the affiliation of the museum to the research institute, the previously separate areas of responsibility of the two institutions were combined. The museum received new rooms in 1980.
