Tenri ( Japanese 天理 市 , -shi , literally: natural law, heavenly reason ) is a city in Japan in Nara prefecture in Japan .
The Isonokami Shrine , a Shinto shrine with religious, historical and artistic importance, is located in Tenri.
The spiritual center of the Tenri religion is also in Tenri and shapes the cityscape. In the city center between the train station and the main temple one sees mostly people in the uniform-like Hapi clothing of the religion with the inscription "Tenrikyo". Loudspeaker systems have been installed in areas of the city that play tenrikyo music every day at 2 p.m. then the believers interrupt their actions and begin a sequence of religious movements that is unexpected for outsiders. The city of Tenri also presents itself on its Japanese website as the "City of Tenrikyō".
The city is the seat of a large private university, the Tenridai and the associated library , which houses a multitude of ancient documents, six national treasures and important cultural assets .
The company Sharp has a larger plant in Tenri.
