The Palacio Nacional de El Salvador is located in the historic center of the capital of El Salvador on Plaza Gerardo Barrios in San Salvador .

history

The original National Palace in classicism style was built between 1866 and 1870. On December 19, 1889, the building was destroyed in a major fire during the night. Reconstruction began in 1905 under the direction of engineer José Emilio Alcaine and master builder Paschasius González Erazo .

In order to cover the renovation costs, a legislative decree by the then President Pedro José Escalón stipulated that a special levy had to be paid for every quintal of coffee that was exported. The materials used were imported from various European countries such as Germany, Italy and Belgium. In 1911 the Palacio Nacional was reopened.

The rooms, around 100 individual rooms and four large halls (salons) on two floors, which were used for representative purposes and meetings, were named after color and were used by various government agencies until the end of 1974. In 1980 the building was declared a national monument.

Historic halls

Salón Azul

The Salón Azul in the west wing was the session hall of the Legislative Assembly. Salón Amarillo was furnished with elegant furniture and served the office of the President of the Republic of El Salvador. The Salón Rosado in the southern part was originally used by the Supreme Court and then by the Ministry of Defense. On the second floor of the palace, on the level of the main lobby, is the Salón Rojo , which was used by the administration for award ceremonies, ambassadors' receptions and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Since 2009, the historic facilities, halls and rooms that are part of the history of the executive, legislative and judicial branches (tres Poderes del Estado) of the country are open to the public from Monday to Friday.
