history

Until the inauguration of the monument to Capitán General José Gerardo Barrios Espinoza , which dominates the place, the square was also known as Plaza Cívica. In 1909 the military monument was unveiled. The approximately 20 meter high bronze equestrian statue on a granite base with the coat of arms of El Salvador and scenes of the battles was created by Francisco Durini. The concept comes from the brothers Antonio and Carlos Ezeta.

The square was also the scene of many historical moments such as:

  • the attack on the president on February 4, 1913, when four men attacked Manuel Enrique Araujo (1865–1913) with machetes; the president died five days later.
  • the riots of March 30, 1980 at the funeral of Bishop Oscar Romero , who was shot by a sniper six days earlier during a mass
  • the celebration of the end of the civil war on February 2, 1992

In 1999 the square was redesigned and ceramic flooring and green spaces were created around the monument.

Today the square is of public interest and the most important place for the celebration of the patron saint of San Salvador (August 5th and 6th) and a destination for numerous parades.
