National Library of El Salvador

The Biblioteca Nacional Francisco Gavidia (formerly Biblioteca Nacional de El Salvador ) is the national library of El Salvador . It is located in the capital, San Salvador .

history

The library was founded during the tenure of President Francisco Dueñas on July 5, 1870. The first building was on the premises of the Universidad de El Salvador.

At the beginning of 1959 a new building with nine floors was built. The new building, completed in 1963, opened on January 16, 1964. On October 10, 1986, the library building was destroyed as a result of the earthquake. In 1994 the National Library moved into the former administration building of Banco Hipotecario on the south side of Plaza Gerardo Barrios .

In 2002 the national library was renamed Biblioteca Nacional Francisco Gavidia in honor of the writer and historian who died in 1955 . The current director is the well-known writer Manlio Argueta .
