Palacio de Santa Cruz (Madrid)
The Palacio de Santa Cruz ( German Santa Cruz Palace ) is a palace built between 1629 and 1636 in the Spanish capital Madrid near the Plaza Mayor . Originally the building was used as a prison until King Philip IV used it as a palace. Today it is one of the most important palatial buildings in Madrid. It is declared as a Bien de Interés Cultural ( German cultural property ).
history
King Philip IV had the building originally built in 1629 as the Spanish Sala de Alcaldes de Casa y Corte (mayor's house), which was also to serve as a court prison. At that time it was called Cárcel de Corte in Spanish .
In 1767 King Philip V used it only as a mayor's house and renamed the building in Spanish Palacio de Santa Cruz .
The palace is currently used by the Spanish Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Cooperación ( e.g. the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation) as its official seat.
