Erlanger Palace

The Palais Erlanger is located in the 4th Vienna district Wieden , Argentinierstraße 33rd

history

The Palais Erlanger was built in 1866 by Friedrich Schachner on Parkallee, now Argentinierstraße, for Franz Pranter. He sold it in the same year to the banker Ludwig Gottlieb Friedrich von Erlanger (1836–1898), who headed the Vienna branch of the Frankfurt banking house Erlanger & Sons . After Ludwig had taken over the management of the Frankfurt parent company, his brother Viktor Alexander von Erlanger (1840-1894) took over the management of the Vienna branch in 1880 and the palace and gave it his name. The form of the strictly historical residential palace corresponds to the Roman High Renaissance. In 1889 it was adapted by the architects Karl König and Oskar Laske and an attic floor was added. Today the palace is used by the embassies of Ecuador and Italy .

description

The square base zone with simple rectangular windows is divided in the central zone with banded pilasters, a round arch portal and lateral arched windows. The wedge of the portal is provided with a heraldic cartouche. Volute consoles with layered beams support a balcony with a balustrade that curves forward in a semicircle in the middle. The windows of the main floor have a Konsolverdachung with triangular gables and festoons in the fall fields and Sohlbankgesimse. Above the unadorned second storey, the balustrade element is repeated in the middle and, as the central zone jumps back, forms a terrace between the side zones one storey higher.
