The Palazzo Benci Zecchini (also Palazzo Girardi Zecchini or Palazzo Benci Zecchini alla Madonna dell'Orto ) is a palace in Venice in the Italian region of Veneto . It is located in the Cannaregio sestiere at the Fondamenta Madonna dell'Orto with a view of the Rio Madonna dell'Orto and the Rio degli Zecchini next to the Palazzo Bartolini .

history

The Lioncini family had the palace built on what was then the city's outskirts. In 1575 it became the property of the Mazza family . The Girardi family , who came from Bergamo , subsequently adopted the name Zecchini through marriage and had the palace partially rebuilt. Their heraldic symbols carved into the fountain in the courtyard. However, construction progressed slowly and the marble slabs intended for this palace were sold in 1635 to the Pesaro family for their palace in the parish of San Stae .

The name Benci came into the Zecchini family as an attribute when Valeria , a daughter of Laura Girardi-Zecchini and Benigno Benci from a Turin family, married in 1635. In 1828 Elisabetta Casser , widow of the last descendant of the Benci-Zecchini family, bequeathed the palace to the Casa di Ricovero di Venezia , which in 1837 became an orphanage where the children could be carried out of the canal's cobbles.

There is also the Villa Benzi Zecchini in the municipality of Caerano di San Marco , which was also sold by Elisabetta Casser to the municipality to care for the disabled. The villa is currently used for cultural events and exhibitions.

description

The Gothic palace has four floors: a mezzanine floor above the ground floor , the main floor above and another mezzanine floor under the roof. On the ground floor there is a high keel arched portal to the Fondamenta Madonna dell'Orto offset to the right from the center ; to the left of this are three arched windows on the ground floor and three arched keel windows on the mezzanine. To the right of this there is only one single window of the same type per floor. The eye-catcher of the facade is the five-fold keel-arched window on the main floor, inserted in a rectangular frame and provided with a balcony with an iron railing. This ensemble is flanked by two pairs of individual keel arched windows, each with its own balcony. The mezzanine floor under the roof is illuminated by seven square individual windows.
