The Palazzo Biscari is the most important palazzo in the Sicilian city ​​of Catania .

history

The palazzo was built on the remains of the city wall from the time of Charles V on behalf of the Paternò Castello family , Principi di Biscari , from 1695 onwards by the baroque architect Alonzo Di Benedetto , as part of the reconstruction of Catania after the earthquake of 1693 Century stands on Via Museo Biscari . In 1772 the artists Matteo Desiderato and Sebastiano Lo Monaco are said to have completed the building.

Ballroom

The Palazzo Biscari has a famous visitor: Johann Wolfgang Goethe , who was received by Prince Vincenzo on May 3, 1787. However, the classic was less interested in the baroque palace than in the collection of antiquities of the prince's deceased father, Ignazio Paternò Castello, 5th Prince of Biscari (1719–1786), an enthusiastic archaeologist (it has been in the Castello Ursino since 1927 ).

The palace recently fell to the Moncada family by inheritance and is inhabited by members of this family. It is therefore not open to the public. However, the grand ballroom is rented out for events.

Facade detail

The facade is particularly noteworthy . It was built in such a way that it could be seen from the passing ships, because the palazzo once stood directly on the sea. The windows of the facade facing the sea were decorated with decorations by the sculptor Antonino Amato from Messina .

Interior

The interior of the Palazzo Biscari and the ballroom are in the Rococo style. The hall was furnished with mirrors and frescoes .
