The gallery is located in the historic Palazzo Carafa di Rocella , which was extensively restored after its acquisition by the city of Naples in 1984 and set up as a documentation center for contemporary art.

history

In 1667, Francesco di Sangro, Prince of San Severo, left a summer residence outside the city walls of Naples as a gift to his son-in-law Don Giuseppe Carafa. In 1717 the house and the gardens and lands belonging to it fell to Ippolita Cantelmo Stuart, wife of the Prince of Roccella, Vincenzo Maria Carafa. She commissioned the architect Luca Vecchioni (active between 1729 and 1775), a close collaborator of the architect Luigi Vanvitelli , with a new building that was carried out between 1755 and 1765. A second and third floor were added between the mid-18th and early 19th centuries. The original pleasure garden belonging to the villa was only completely destroyed between 1950 and 1959, as was part of the historical building fabric and interior design in the 1960s.

In 1984 the city of Naples acquired the building, which was rededicated as an art hall and documentation center for contemporary art. The Hungarian art historian Lóránd Hegyi played a key role in the concept and implementation .

The house was opened in 2005 with the exhibition “The Giving Person. Il dono dell'artista ”, curated by the artistic director of the house Lóránd Hegyi.

Infrastructure

The house with its three floors has 6,000 m² of floor space. In addition to the exhibition and administration rooms, it houses a library, a media library, archive rooms, laboratories and rooms for museum educational work.
