biography

Hegyi taught at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest and at the University of Graz in the 1980s . From 1990 to 2001 he headed the Museum of Modern Art Vienna . During this time he built up one of the largest collections of Eastern European art in Europe. Another station of his work was Sarajevo, where he started the Trigon project in 1991, in which artists from Austria, Yugoslavia and Hungary took part. When the South Slavic War broke out, he insisted that the Serbian artists remain among the exhibitors. The exhibition was shown in Munich and Trieste. When war broke out in Sarajevo in 1993, he fought to ensure that all Yugoslav ethnic groups could take part in the Venice Biennale. This should ensure the cohesion of the artists in this tragic situation.

Since July 2003, Hegyi has been director of the Museum of Modern Art in Saint-Étienne, where he heads the second largest collection of contemporary art in France.

Between 2002 and 2006 he laid the foundation stone for the Palazzo delle Arti di Napoli as a gallery and museum, which he directed for four years. He was also the curator of several exhibitions.
