As Palombière refers to a hunting lodge , designed specifically for hunting on wood pigeons is prepared. This type of hunting is particularly popular in south-west France. There wood pigeons fly in autumn and spring on their migration to the wintering areas and in spring back to their breeding areas along the coastal region. It is from these palombières that the greatest number of pigeons are shot in France. The annual hunting range is around 800,000 animals.

It is a traditional form of hunting. It is practiced mainly by men who eat and drink together in the shelters. It is therefore of great social importance in the rural regions in which this form of hunting is practiced. The pigeons are shot from there, but are also often attracted by a decoy (i.e. a captive wood pigeon) and caught with nets. The captured pigeons are processed into traditional French dishes such as salmis de palombes .
