Panagia Theoskepasti
The Panagia Theoskepasti ( Greek Παναγία Θεοσκέπαστη ) is a church building of the Cypriot Orthodox Church in Paphos on Cyprus . The church stands free on a rock that rises within the lower town of Kato Paphos.
history
The Panagia Theoskepasti was built in 1922 over the foundation walls of an older Byzantine church in a mixture of Byzantine and Neo-Gothic style features as a cross- domed church with three apses , a central dome and a narthex .
According to local tradition, the previous Byzantine church was spared from destruction during the Arab invasion of Cyprus in 653 by the intervention of God. Therefore the new Marienkirche ( Panagia ) received the nickname Theoskepasti , translated veiled by God . The old church was destroyed at an unknown date.
