origin

Tim Westergren, founder of Pandora

Pandora is based on the Music Genome Project , which was founded on January 6, 2000 by Tim Westergren . Westergren sat down with professional and amateur musicians and tried to assign different attributes to pieces of music. Within five years, titles from 10,000 performers were examined in this way.

The name Music Genome Project is derived from the Human Genome Project , whose aim was to sequence the human genome .

functionality

The user first inputs the title of a song or the name of an artist. If it is contained in the title database, musically similar titles are searched for and played as a radio program. The listener specifies his musical taste by indicating whether he likes individual songs or not. The playback window points directly to Amazon and the iTunes Store , where the corresponding albums can be purchased.

It is not possible to rewind within individual songs or play them repeatedly. In addition, you cannot commit yourself to a specific artist or band, but rely on the random selection by Pandora. The “skip song” function can be used up to six times per hour; however, restarting Pandora avoids this.

The site displays its content with the proprietary Flash Player , which also plays the music. But there is also a whole range of stand-alone players.

For licensing reasons, since May 3, 2007, access from outside the USA, Australia and New Zealand has been recognized and blocked on the basis of the IP address ; British users were granted access until January 15, 2008. The previously stored data on radio stations and musical preferences that had been created were retained, so that at a later point in time, if the licenses should allow this, access to profiles that had already been created can be enabled again.
