The Pangea mathematics competition is a Germany-wide mathematics competition for students in grades 3 to 10 that has been held annually since 2007. Organizer is the association Pangea Competitions e. V. from Frankfurt am Main . Federal Minister Johanna Wanka from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research was the patron of the mathematics competition between October 2013 and December 2014.

The competition

procedure

All general education schools in Germany with students from grades 3–10 / EF can participate. There is no differentiation according to school types. In 2018, 99,140 students across Germany took part in the competition.

Preliminary round

For the preliminary round (usually at the end of February), for grades 3 & 4 15 and for grades 5–10 / EF 20 multiple-choice questions from 5 different point categories, each with 5 answers, are given within 45–60 minutes solve are. The contents are compiled from the previous year's topics as well as puzzle and logic tasks. For the 2018 competition year, the first 10 per grade level, i.e. a total of 480 students from the intermediate round, took part in the regional finals at 6 locations in different federal states. A final written competition among the respective class levels decides who will receive the gold, silver and bronze medals. All placements and winners will then be communicated at the award ceremony and awarded with monetary and material prizes as well as certificates and T-shirts.

The motto of the Pangea mathematics competition is "Mathematics connects". Students from all levels of education and society should be enthusiastic about mathematics. With the help of clever questions that are curriculum and fun-oriented, as well as independent of the school type, the participants are introduced to their skills. The weaker students are motivated and supported, strong students are further strengthened.
