A pancytopenia is a cell count decrease in all three cell lines ( Trizytopenie ) of blood formation, so the white ( leukopenia ), the red blood cells ( anemia ) and platelets ( thrombocytopenia ). Pancytopenia is either a disorder of blood formation in the bone marrow or an increased breakdown of blood cells.

Bone marrow disorders with panleucopenia include bone marrow aplasia , acute leukemia , myelodysplastic syndrome , multiple myeloma , malignant bone marrow lymphoma , bone marrow tuberculosis , megaloblastic anemia , bone marrow fibrosis, and hemophagocytic syndrome . Bone marrow damage can also be triggered by drugs ( busulfan , cyclophosphamide , anthracyclines , nitrosoureas , metamizole ), radiation therapy or exposure to radiation or chemical substances ( benzene , other organic solvents, insecticides ).

An increased breakdown of blood cells can occur in splenomegaly .

The consequences of pancytopenia are a risk of infection due to a lack of leukocytes , weakness due to a lack of erythrocytes (red blood cells) and a tendency to bleed due to a lack of platelets .
