List of rose varieties

The dark red rose variety Papa Meilland was introduced by the French rose breeder Alain Meilland in 1963 and is dedicated to Alain's father Francis Meilland. It was bred by crossing 'Chrysler Imperial' × 'Charles Mallerin'.

'Papa Meilland', named World Rose in 1988 , is considered by many to be the best red tea hybrid . The modern rose has an upright growth habit with dark green foliage and is remontant . The elegant buds open into elegantly shaped, velvety dark red flowers with a diameter of about 13 cm and 35 petals. After the long-stemmed, upright flowers appear individually and last a long time, they make good cut flowers.

The rose has received several awards for its strong, sweet fragrance.

“Its scent is rich in geraniol and neroli , a characteristic of the modern Damascus rose . It also has a strong, fresh green note, the sweetness of fresh honey and an intense fragrance. "

The rose bush reaches a height of 90 to 120 cm and a diameter of 60 to 120 cm. 'Papa Meilland' is hardy down to −15 ° C ( USDA zone 7b ) and can be susceptible to powdery mildew.
