Papey is an island in southeast Iceland .

The island is about 2 km² and rises up to 58 m above sea level. Papey belongs to the municipality of Djúpavogshreppur and is 8 km away from the place. The island was inhabited from the time Iceland was settled until 1966. Today there is still a house, a lighthouse and a church. An automatic weather observation station has existed since 1998.

The island is particularly interesting for bird watching, as there are tens of thousands of breeding pairs, especially the popular tourist puffins , some species of gulls and various ducks .

Surname

Papey takes its name from Irish hermit monks (papar) who are said to have lived here before the arrival of the Viking settlers in the 9th and 10th centuries. Despite numerous excavation efforts, this could not be proven archaeologically.
