Elmar Edel

Elmar Edel (born March 12, 1914 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , † April 25, 1997 ) was a German Egyptologist and hetithologist .

After graduating from high school in Würzburg , Elmar Edel studied Egyptology in Heidelberg with Hermann Ranke and from 1934 in Berlin with Kurt Sethe and Hermann Grapow . He studied Hittology in Berlin with Hans Ehelolf .

In 1937 he edited various Hittite texts for the German Orient Society in the Near Eastern Department of the Berlin museums . During this time he came into contact with the Egyptian-Hittite correspondence . These are writings between Egypt and Hattuša from the second millennium BC. In 1941 he received his doctorate under Hermann Grapow . His dissertation was entitled Investigations into the Phraseology of the Egyptian Inscriptions of the Old Kingdom .

In 1955 he became an associate professor for Egyptology at the University of Bonn , and since 1963 he has been a full professor there. Elmar Edel and his team from the University of Bonn examined the necropolis of Qubbet el-Hawa in 20 field campaigns from 1959 to 1981. He systematically documented the approx. 80 rock graves in their aboveground and underground sections with all epigraphic data as well as the finds and findings.

Elmar Edel has been a full member of the German Archaeological Institute since 1960 and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen , in 1970 he became a full member of the Rhenish-Westphalian Academy of Sciences , in 1977 a corresponding member of the Institut d'Égypte , and in 1979 a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences Sciences and 1982 full member of the Academia Mediterranea delle Science Catania .
