The Bagel paper factory (also Bagelsche paper mill ) is a former paper factory on the Anger in Ratingen . The factory buildings have been entered in the list of architectural monuments in Ratingen since February 1, 1988 (No. A 175).

History as a paper mill

The Elberfeld paper merchant Johann Bargmann first built a paper mill in 1789 on the present site . The Anger supplied both the hydropower needed and the soft water for papermaking.

Peter August Bagel (1809–1881), who ran the business of the Bagel publishing and printing family from 1843 , acquired the paper mill in 1852, modernized it with paper making machines and a steam engine, and began operations in 1855.

By 1860, 45 workers were turning 1,800 pounds of rags into 1,200 pounds of printing and writing paper a day.

In 1904 a major renovation and expansion took place, from which the majority of the current building stock originates.

In 1938, 100 people found work here. During this time there was a connection to the Angertal Railway .

Paper production ended in 1980.

Further use

The buildings were then partly used for a printing company, which burned down completely on January 2, 2013 and has not been replaced since then.

From 2002, the intake structure was rebuilt in order to better regulate a backwater in the event of flooding.

Today there are various uses for the building ensemble, including rooms for the Ratingen art and music club, for a daycare center and for artist studios.
