Paper Technology Center (2018)

The paper research center or Paper Technology Center (PTC) of the paper machine manufacturer Voith Paper is located on its premises in Heidenheim an der Brenz . It opened in May 2006.

task

In the paper research center, the research areas “ fiber technology ” and “ paper manufacturing process ” are combined. In the PTC it is possible to test and optimize the entire papermaking process (raw material composition, machine configuration, automation steps and processes, machine clothing, end product quality) under real conditions. Around 100 employees, including papermakers, paper engineers and specialists in machine control, are researching the further development of paper in the Paper Technology Center together with paper manufacturers. Due to the modular structure of this system, different production concepts can be tested and compared. If necessary, machine parts with weights of up to 600 tons can be removed and replaced en bloc. In the Paper Technology Center there is a fiber design system with which the raw material for paper production can be adapted to the requirements of the later paper.

building

The PTC buildings have a volume of 112,000 cubic meters. The largest single building is the paper machine hall, 115 m long, 42 m wide and 28 m high. The curved roof has the shape of a paper web in the wet area of a paper machine, windows and glass sections are reminiscent of the rollers of a paper machine. Inside are the control stands, from which the test paper machine is controlled and monitored.

Stock preparation / fiber design

In the stock preparation building , waste paper and fiber are provided with additives and mixed into a pulp as the raw material for the paper. The term "fiber design" comes from the addition of fibers to increase tear resistance. The silos, known as “pulp towers”, each hold up to 350 cubic meters, and up to 20 tons of fibrous material can be pumped to the paper machine every day via the pipe bridge to the paper machine hall.

Test paper machine VPM 6

The heart of the Paper Technology Center is the 75 m long test paper machine 6, or VPM 6 for short. While the previous record in paper production was around 1900 meters per minute, the VPM 6 can produce up to 3000 meters per minute. The paper production corresponds to a speed of 180 km / h. All components can be exchanged in a short time. The paper produced in the VPM 6 is coated in the adjacent coating machine or smoothed in the calender .

Industrial thermal power station

There is an industrial cogeneration plant next to the PTC. The resulting hot steam is used for the PTC to heat the rollers of the VPM 6. In addition, water is recovered in a closed circuit. The water that flows from the PTC into the sewage treatment plant as "waste water" is cleaned beforehand. Any paper residues that arise are processed in a paper mill.

Future use

Due to the collapse in demand for paper machines on the world market, research work at the site was stopped in 2016 and the paper machine was sold. According to the first plans, the hall should be converted into an office building. In December 2017, Voith CEO Hubert Lienhard announced the final demolition and demolition of the building.
