Papyrus Hibeh 1.72

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Papyrus Hibeh 1.72 (also pHibeh 1.72 ) is a papyrus fragment from the sixth year of reign (241 BC) of Ptolemy III. originates and is possibly the only contemporary document so far in which Manetho is mentioned as a still active priest (Μανεθῶι "the Manetho").

content

The beginning of the text is lost because the upper part of the papyrus is missing. The writer's concern could be deduced from the further report. The long content refers to an official seal from the Temple of Heracles in Phebichis that disappeared in the sixth year of the reign and has not been found for about four months.

In this context, the priest Chesmenis and his son Semtheus are accused of stealing the seal. Chesmenis denies the charge, but the next day four other priests testify that they saw the seal in the sanctuary of Chesmenis. The grounds for the indictment follow on the seventh  Phamenoth :

“As early as the month of Choiak, Petosiris, the high priest, asked for an opinion on the temple seal, which on the 9th  Hathyr was probably used by Chesmenis and his son Semtheus, because they wished to write to Manetho. Since then we have not been able to use a seal, not even a (replacement) seal. "
