The Parabellum MG 14 or aircraft MG Parabellum was a light machine gun developed by Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken AG (DWM) - under the Parabellum brand . The Parabellum machine gun was used in the German Reich during the First World War .
The basis of the design was the MG 08 , which was revised to save weight. In particular, the weapon could do without water cooling, instead a perforated barrel jacket was attached. The ammunition was taken from a drum attached to the right side. Inside were cartridge belts wound into 250 shot.
The MG 14 was mainly used in two-seat aircraft. The observer operated the movably mounted weapon and secured the stern while the pilot fired forward with a permanently installed MG 08/15 . Copies that were installed in airships were equipped with water cooling for safety reasons.
In the beginning only rarely given to the infantry, towards the end of the war larger numbers appeared on the battlefields; a bipod could be retrofitted for this purpose.
In 1917 the model was revised and listed as MG 14/17 . For better handling, the diameter of the voluminous barrel jacket was reduced and the controls were redesigned so that they could also be operated with gloves. In addition, the MG received a mounting rail for telescopic sights .
