Parageusie ( ancient Greek : παρά para = next to, against; ἡ γεύσις he geusis , -εως -eos f. = The taste) describes the change in the sense of taste or the perception of taste. Parageusia is a taste disorder and is treated in the field of ear, nose and throat medicine . Taste stimuli are perceived differently than with normal taste sensation.

In contrast to anosmia, it is not the sense of smell that is affected , but rather the taste buds in the mouth, traditionally responsible for the tastes bitter , sweet, sour and salty. This leads to a changed, bad, for example bitter taste in the mouth.

The possible causes are manifold, they can be caused as side effects of drugs, gastrointestinal diseases (especially medicines against Helicobacter bacteria), heartburn or spoiled food, such as nuts or kernels .

The quality of life is noticeably impaired if, for example, everything tastes bitter . A taste disturbance can diminish and go away completely within a few days or weeks.
