Vourlia ( Greek Παραλία Βούρλια Paralia Vourlia ) is a beach in the southeast of the Greek island of Crete . It is one of the beaches of Ambelos ( Παραλίες της Αμπέλου ) on the coast of the Levantine Sea and belongs to the settlement of Xerokambos ( Ξερόκαμπος ) of the municipality of Sitia ( Σητεία ).

Location and description

Vourlia is located about 700 meters north of the small peninsula Trachilos ( Ακρωτήριο Τράχηλος ). The buildings of the scattered settlement Xerokambos extend about 500 meters inland to the north and west of the beach. It is bordered on both sides by low rocks that reach into the water. To the north of the rocks joins the central beach ( Κεντρική Παραλία ) of Xerokambos, in the south the beach Chiona ( Παραλία Χιώνα ), also called Ambelos ( Παραλία Άμπελος ). About 80 meters west of Vourlia on the hill Farmakokefalo ( Φαρμακοκέφαλο ) is the archaeological site of the Hellenistic settlement of Xerokambos , which is partially identified with the ancient Ampelos .

Tavern behind the beach

An asphalt road runs along the beach of Vourlia , which opens up several beaches on the coast. Behind the road there is an olive grove , as it is typical for the plain of Xerokambos. There are several taverns and accommodations to the north of the beach. In the southwest there is an unpaved parking lot, which is also used by visitors to the beaches south of Vourlia and the archaeological site.

Vourlia beach is about 100 meters long and its maximum width is 20 meters. The sandy beach leading flat into the sea is interspersed with some larger stones. Behind the beach there are individual tamarisk trees on the road and as a boundary to the parking lot. On the southern beach area, ten parasols with loungers underneath are rented out during the season. Vourlia was designated as a bathing water in 1996. Since 2010, the water quality has been regularly checked in accordance with the EU Bathing Water Directive and has always been rated excellent since 2012. ,

Access

Xerokambos can be reached via country roads from Ziros (Ζίρος) in the west or Zakros (Ζάκρος) in the north. The access road to the beaches, to which Vourlia belongs, goes west or north from the main road Xerokambos. Free parking is possible in the unpaved parking lot in front of the beach.
