Parandaria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Parandaria (pl. Parandariae ) or Parendaria is a type of transport ship used in the Middle Ages , which was mainly used for heavy loads (e.g. stones). During the conquest of Constantinople , Parendarii were used in the fleet of Sultan Mehmed II and presumably used to transport troops across the Bosporus and the Golden Horn . Bernhard von Breidenbach describes in his letters "from the siege of Rhodes by the Turks" to Pope Sixtus IV in 1480 also the use of these ships. The available sources do not allow any clear conclusions to be drawn about the type of construction and the propulsion used (oars, sails or towline), but suggest that it is mainly used in the coastal waters of the Levant .
