Paraproct

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Paraprokt , derived from the Greek para = "beside, above, wherein" and proctos = "After", the pair of side plates (Ventrolateralplatten) are of the eleventh abdomen segment of insects , respectively. In most insects, these clasp-like surround the anus and the end ring ( periproct ), in many original insects they are also very well developed together with the dorsal epiproct (jointly referred to as anal valves ).

Together with the dorsal epiproct , they assume a special function in the larvae of the dragonfly (Zygoptera). Here all three sclerites are extended to leaf-shaped tracheal gills and are used for breathing in the water.
