The Parc national de la Yamaska is one of the national parks in the Canadian province of Québec . There, however , a parc national corresponds to what a provincial park is in the other provinces and territories . The park is operated by Sépaq ( French Société des établissements de plein air du Québec or English Society of outdoor recreation establishments of Quebec ).

The task of the park established in 1983 in the extreme south of the province, only 12.89 km² in size, is to surround the Réservoir Choinière , a drinking water reservoir, which is under considerably stricter protection, and to supply it with pure water via the Rivière Yamaska Nord . The entry of chemicals from agriculture makes this work difficult.

history

The reserve was created in 1977 on the North Yamaska River. A water protection area has been established to ensure the water supply for the town of Granby . This was done on the basis of a reservoir of 30 million m³ of water. The 466 hectare reservoir lies almost entirely outside the park. The Lac Waterloo is heavily eutrophied and different ways of revitalizing a lake are to be tested on it. Since the Yamaska Nord is the only notable tributary to the lake, the eutrophication of this river by fertilizers used in agriculture had to be stopped between 1980 and 1990, which was only partially successful. The area, which was overfished at times, limited the number of winter catches to 40,000 white fish , so that the stocks of several fish species could recover.
