Parkes Castle

Parke's Castle ( Irish Caisleán Parke ) is a noble seat in County Leitrim, Ireland . The Englishman Robert Parke built it in the 17th century on the banks of Lough Gill on regional road 286 on the rubble of the demolished tower house of the O'Rourkes. In doing so, he largely retained the pentagonal outer walls and built a three-story mansion in the east .

The tower house was demolished because Brian O'Rourke had given shelter to the Spanish captain Francisco de Cuellar, who was shipwrecked with the Spanish navy in 1588 on the coast of Ireland. De Cuellar described O'Rourke's hospitality after returning to Spain. In 1590 the English heard of it and sent forces to Brefni to destroy the tower house. O'Rourke fled to Scotland but was extradited and executed in 1591. The building, which looks defensive on the outside, is a mansion on the inside. Three of the outer walls, which include a dovecote and the stone buildings within the courtyard, appear to be original.

The property forms the east side of the rampart, which was originally surrounded by a moat , parts of which are still visible. At the western end is a sweat house and a dovecote (Engl. Dovecote ). At the end of the 20th century, the property was restored by the Office of Public Works .
