General election in the Bahamas 1977
The 1977 general election in the Bahamas took place on July 19, 1977.
background
The 1977 elections were the first since independence in 1973. Four parties competed for seats in the House of Assembly : the ruling Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), led by Prime Minister Lynden Pindling , the Bahamas Democratic Party (BDP), the Free National Movement (FNM) and the newly formed Vanguard Socialist Party . Twelve independent candidates also applied. Central themes of the six-week election campaign were economic issues, in particular unemployment and corruption in public life. The prime minister claimed that his party was best placed to lead the country after ten years in office.
Election result
The PLP defeated the divided opposition and thus increased the number of its seats in parliament. Lynden Pindling formed a new, slightly enlarged cabinet on July 29th.
