The Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) is a social-liberal party in the Bahamas .

Political orientation and party history

The PLP is a populist and social liberal party belonging to the left political spectrum. The party's chairman is Perry Christie , who was Prime Minister of the Bahamas from 2002 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2017 .

The PLP was founded in 1953 by William Cartwright , Cyril Stevenson and Henry Milton Taylor , making it the Bahamas' first national political party. It provided the government from January 16, 1967 to August 21, 1992, from May 3, 2002 to May 4, 2007 and again from May 8, 2012 to May 11, 2017. The party was led in 1967 by Lynden O. Pindling , who then became Prime Minister. After the victory, the PLP government nationalized a private company because of its socialist orientation. After the PLP elections to the assembly house ( House of Assembly ) had won, Perry Christie was first prime minister before the PLP in the elections of the rival on 3 May 2002 Free National Movement was defeated (FNM) won 23 of 41 seats . Thereupon the FNM chairman Hubert Ingraham , who had replaced Lynden O. Pindling in 1992, became prime minister for the second time. After the defeat and the resignation of one of its MPs from the party, the PLP only provided 17 of the 41 MPs.

In the elections of May 7, 2012, the PLP won a clear majority in a nationwide election victory and received 29 in the House of Assembly reduced to 38 seats, so that Christie was sworn in as Prime Minister on May 8, 2012 again. In the last elections on May 10, 2017, the PLP suffered a severe defeat and only got 59,253 votes (36.94 percent) and lost 25 of its 29 seats, so that it is only represented by four members in the meeting house. The new Prime Minister was Hubert Minnis from the FNM on May 11, 2017 .
