Hubert Minnis
Hubert Alexander Minnis (* 1954 in Bain Town, New Providence ) has been Prime Minister of the Bahamas since May 11, 2017 . He has been chairman of the ruling Free National Movement (FNM) party since 2012 .
Life
Minnis was born in Bain Town to a seamstress and a gas station owner. He attended Our Lady's Primary School, Western Junior, and St. Augustine's College in Nassau . He studied at St. Thomas College , Minnesota , then moved to the University of Minnesota , where he received a BA in biology. Then began studying medicine at the University of the West Indies , which he completed with a doctorate. In 1985 he became a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists .
He returned to the Bahamas and worked at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau. He was chairman of the Medical Association of the Bahamas and the Hotel Corporation of the Bahamas, and was a lecturer in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of the West Indies.
Minnis is married and has three sons.
Political career
Minnis first appeared in 2007 in the election to the House of Assembly , the lower house of Parliament as a candidate for the Free National Movement (FNM) and won the constituency of Killarney. The FNM won 23 of 41 seats and was the government under Hubert Ingraham . Minnis became Minister of Health.
The FNM suffered a defeat in the 2012 parliamentary election. The opposition Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) under Perry Christie won 29 of the 38 seats. Minnis was able to defend his parliamentary seat in Killarney and was elected party leader of the FNM. In December 2016, 7 of the 10 FNM MPs withdrew their trust and elected his former deputy, Loretta Butler-Turner, as opposition leader. The FNM refused Butler-Turner to run again in their constituency Long Island, whereupon they ran as an independent and was expelled from the party.
Minnis, became opposition leader again, the FNM received 35 out of 39 seats in the parliamentary elections on May 8, 2017. Minnis, who defended his Killarney constituency, was sworn in as prime minister on May 11th.
