He was kicked out of Government High School because of his poor academic performance . This was a drastic experience for the young Perry Christie. In order to still get a school leaving certificate, he then attended the Estern Senior School in Nassau . After graduating there, he went to University Tutorial College in London and Birmingham University . There he made his LL.B. Political career

Perry Christie celebrated his first political success in November 1974 when he was named the youngest senator in the history of the Bahamas by the incumbent Prime Minister Lynden O. Pindling . He held this office until June 1977 and was appointed chairman of the gaming authority in January 1978. For the parliamentary elections in 1977 he stood up for the Progressive Liberal Party in the electoral district of Centerville. After the PLP and Perry Christie won the election, the new MP was brought into the cabinet of Lynden Pindling, where he took over the Ministry of Health and Social Security. In the next elections in June 1982 he managed to be re-elected and this time took over the Ministry of Tourism. After massive allegations of corruption and bribery against the Pindling government, Perry Christie left the cabinet and the party in 1984.

In the next elections in 1987 he ran as a non-party and defended his seat in parliament. In March 1990 he rejoined the PLP and then took over the Ministry of Agriculture, Trade and Industry. In the parliamentary elections in August 1992, he was able to defend his seat in parliament despite the strong loss of votes by his party, which no longer had a majority. In January 1993 he was elected a deputy party leader and took over responsibility for extra-parliamentary activities of his party. In the parliamentary elections in March 1997, Perry Christie was able to secure the newly created Farm Road district and thus had one of only six PLP seats in the House of Assembly .

On April 5, 1997, Perry Christie was elected in a special meeting as the new leader of the PLP, replacing Lynden Pindling, who had led the party since 1956. In the election he stood up against his two competitors Dr. Bernard J. Nottage and Philip C. Galanis . Two days later, on April 7th, he was appointed leader of the opposition by the Governor General Sir Orville Alton Turnquest . In the parliamentary elections on May 2, 2002, Perry Christie and his party won the election and beat his old friend Hubert Ingraham of the Free National Movement , in which they won 29 of the 40 seats in the House of Assembly. Since May 3rd, he is the 3rd Prime Minister of the Bahamas after independence. In the early morning hours of May 3, 2005, Perry Christie suffered a minor stroke , and Deputy Prime Minister Cynthia Pratt took office from May 4 to May 22. In the May 2007 elections, the Free National Movement won and FNP boss Hubert Ingraham became Prime Minister.

In the parliamentary elections on May 7, 2012, Christie's PLP won an absolute majority, and Christie was sworn in as Prime Minister on May 8, 2012.

The general election on May 8, 2017, lost the PLP, which only received 4 of the 39 seats, and Perry was unable to defend his constituency. His successor as head of government was the FNM chairman Hubert Minnis .
