A total of 33 seats

The 2019 regional elections in Castilla-La Mancha will take place on May 26, 2019 to elect the 10th Cortes of the Autonomous Community of Castilla-La Mancha . All 33 seats in the Cortes are available to choose from. The elections will take place at the same time as the regional elections in eleven other autonomous communities and local elections across Spain as well as the elections to the European Parliament in 2019.

Electoral system

The Cortes of Castilla-La Mancha are the decentralized, unicameral legislature of the Autonomous Community of Castilla-La Mancha, which has legislative power in regional matters as defined by the Spanish Constitution and the Castilian-Manchagian Statute of Autonomy, as well as the ability to to elect or withdraw confidence in a President of the Communities Junta. The vote for the Cortes is based on universal suffrage, which includes all nationals over eighteen years of age who are registered in the Castile-La Mancha region and who are in full exercise of their political rights. In addition, Castilian-Manchagic people abroad must apply for an election before being allowed to vote, a system known as "begging" or expat voting (Spanish: Voto rogado). The 33 members of the Cortes of Castilla-La Some are elected according to the D'Hondt method and a closed list ratio, whereby a threshold of 3 percent of the valid votes - including empty votes - applies in each constituency. Parties that do not reach the threshold are not taken into account in the allocation of seats The application of the D'Hondt method can lead to an effective threshold of over three percent depending on the size of the district. The seats are assigned to the constituencies corresponding to the provinces of Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara and Toledo. Each constituency is initially entitled to at least three seats, the remaining 18 being distributed among the constituencies in proportion to its population z provides that parties, associations, coalitions and groups of voters can submit lists of candidates. The associations of voters are, however, obliged to secure the signature of at least one percent of the voters registered in the constituency for which they are standing for election. Voters are prohibited from signing for more than one list of candidates. At the same time, parties and associations that intend to form a coalition in order to jointly participate in an election are obliged to inform the responsible electoral commission within ten days of the declaration of the election.

Election date

The term of the Cortes of Castilla-La Mancha expires four years from the date of their last election. The elections to the Cortes are set for the fourth Sunday in May every four years. The last election took place on May 24, 2015, with the election date for the Cortes set on Sunday May 26, 2019. The President of the Junta of the Communities had the prerogative to dissolve the Cortes of Castilla-La Mancha and to run a quick election, provided that there was no motion of censure, no national elections were due and some time constraints were met: namely, that the dissolution neither during of the first legislative period took place within the last year of the legislature before its planned expiry, before a year had passed since an earlier dissolution. Any quick elections held as a result of these circumstances would not change the time until the next ordinary election, as the elected MPs only serve what is left of their four-year terms. In the event that an investiture process does not elect a regional president within two months of the first ballot, the candidate from the party with the highest number of seats is automatically elected.
