Parliamentary election in Nauru 2008
The parliamentary elections in Nauru 2008 on April 26, 2008 in Nauru were about 7,000 voters entitled to elect a new parliament. The legislature, also called the House in Nauru , consists of 18 members and is usually elected every three years. It elects a president from among its members, who is usually elected by the newly elected MPs with a relative majority after the national parliamentary elections. The president then names his cabinet, which consists of five to six ministers. The president is both head of state and government. The last election took place on August 25, 2007. The turnout in Nauru is likely to be very high again, since voting is compulsory from the age of 20.
Parties
There is a multi-party system in parliament ; the two opposition parties are the Naoero Amo and the Democratic Party of Nauru. There is also a conservative but informal party, the Center Party. The Naoero Amo plays a prominent role in the party spectrum, while the Democratic Party and the Center Party have little political influence.
