General election in Trinidad and Tobago 1976

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1976 parliamentary elections in Trinidad and Tobago took place on September 13, 1976. In this regular election, all members of the House of Representatives , which at that time comprised 36 members, were newly elected.

background

These elections were the first after a new constitution came into force in Trinidad and Tobago on August 1, 1976, according to which Trinidad and Tobago is a republic within the British Commonwealth . In contrast to the previous election in 1971 , which had been boycotted by the main opposition parties and the People's National Movement (PNM) won all the seats, nine political parties and a number of independent candidates ran in this election. Among these were the newly formed left-wing United Labor Front (ULF) and the Democratic Action Congress .

Election result

The PNM won 24 seats in this election. This number was also reached in the last full elections in 1966. The Democratic Action Congress won the two seats from Tobago. The new PNM cabinet of Eric Williams , who had been Prime Minister since 1956 , was sworn in on September 22, 1976.
